Police said the husband of House Speaker and Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi was taken to hospital for treatment after an intruder attacked him after breaking into their California home.
A spokesman for the US House of Representatives said the man who attacked Nancy Pelosi’s husband at the couple’s home on Friday morning was indeed looking for the Democratic leader.
“Earlier this morning, Paul Pelosi was attacked in his home by an intruder who used force and threatened to kill him, demanding a meeting with President Nancy Pelosi,” Drew Hamill said in a statement.
American media reported that the suspect was shouting “Where’s Nancy?” At the time of the attack, it was speculated that his motives were political, but San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott said the motive had not yet been determined.
For its part, the White House said that President Joe Biden called Pelosi to express his support after the “terrifying attack” and that he was praying for her husband.
Biden said on the Philadelphia campaign tour that there is “no place” for political violence in the United States. The US President added: “This is disgusting. There is no place in America (for him).
Biden noted that the assailant yelled “Where’s Nancy?”, as did some of the protesters who stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021, according to a number of local media outlets.
