US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken called his South African counterpart Naledi Pandor amid the recall of South Africa’s US ambassador to the country.
In a US State Department statement on the matter, Blinken “emphasized the importance of the strategic partnership between the United States and South Africa and reaffirmed cooperation on shared priorities, including health, trade and energy.”
The South African Foreign Ministry summoned US Ambassador to Pretoria Robin Brigetti amid accusations that South Africa was supplying arms to Russia.
Later, the South African Foreign Ministry said that the ambassador apologized for his remarks after a note of protest was submitted to him.
