The U.S. House of Representatives has decided to postpone its meeting on the election of the speaker of the House until noon today, Thursday, for the second day in a row. As in the three fruitless ballots held on Tuesday, Wednesday in three new ballots, but they all failed as McCarthy, MP from California convinced about 20 Republican colleagues who are supporters of former President Donald Trump to elect Nancy Pelosi as his successor because they argued that he was too moderate.
The deputies agreed to postpone the meeting on the election of the speaker of parliament until 12 noon on Thursday.
A majority of 218 votes is required to elect the Speaker of the House, the third most important figure in American politics after the President and Vice President. Over the course of six rounds of voting, McCarthy failed to pass the threshold of 203 votes.
Representatives are expected to continue voting until a speaker is elected to their council. This can take hours or weeks: in 1859, members of Congress agreed on a president after only two months and 133 ballots.
Earlier Wednesday, President Trump called on his fellow Republicans to vote for McCarthy in the House Speaker election after failing to vote for him 3 times amid deep Republican divisions.
