On the Libyan pages on social networks, the news appeared that the Prime Minister of the Government of National Accord Abdel Hamid Dabaiba decided to spend 30,000 dinars for every Libyan who decided to marry a second woman.
The publications include an image of what appears to be breaking news in which “Mr. Abdul Hamid al-Dabaiba issues a decision” to spend this amount, equivalent to approximately $6,000, “on every Libyan who marries a second wife, provided she does not under the age of 25.” However, this information is not true. The news has received dozens of posts from several Libyan pages on news sites, although it has no impact on the official sites of the government of national unity or on credible news sites. AFP journalists in Tripoli confirmed that no such decision was made by the authorities. For decades, Libyan law allowed polygamy subject to the consent of the first wife, but this condition was abolished after the fall of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011.
In September 2021, the Government of National Unity in Tripoli launched the “Marriage Support Grant Scheme” to support young people about to get married by giving each couple an equal 40,000 dinars, provided the young woman is Libyan. But this scholarship has nothing to do with polygamy.
