UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay has called for a full investigation into the murder of TV journalist Shirin Abu Akle in Jenin in the Palestinian West Bank.
In a statement by UNESCO, the Director-General condemned the killing of Shirin Abu Akle, holding that the killing in the conflict zone of a journalist who was clearly wearing press insignia was a violation of international law, calling on the relevant authorities to investigate this crime and bring those responsible to justice.
The statement indicated that Shirin Abu Akleh, as a well-known reporter, was reporting in Jenin when she was mortally wounded, despite wearing a jacket marked “press”.
