UN Mission in Sudan Warns of Potential “Crimes Against Humanity” in Darfur
The head of the UN Mission in Sudan, Volker Peretz, has issued a warning that the violence occurring in the Darfur region could be considered “crimes against humanity.” Peretz expressed his concern about the situation, stating that since the latest fighting began in April, the security, human rights, and humanitarian conditions have continued to deteriorate rapidly throughout the country. This is particularly true in the Greater Khartoum, Darfur, and Kordofan areas.
Emerging Pattern of Large-Scale Attacks on Civilians Based on Ethnicity
Peretz is particularly alarmed about the situation in El Geneina (Western Darfur), where multiple waves of violence have taken on an ethnic character. He spoke about the emerging pattern of large-scale attacks against civilians based on their ethnicity, which are allegedly carried out by Arab militias and some armed men in RSF uniforms. These reports are extremely troubling, and if true, could amount to crimes against humanity.
Darfur Governor Calls for Assistance
Darfur Governor Minni Minawi recently called on the population to take up arms and declared that the region had become a “disaster zone.” He spoke about the “horrible violations” committed by militants in the region and denounced the “looting and killings” taking place in several areas. Minawi has declared Darfur a disaster zone and is urging the world to send humanitarian materials across all borders and by all available means.
The Urgent Need for Assistance
The situation in Darfur is dire, and urgent assistance is needed to help the people affected by the violence. The UN and other international organizations must take immediate action to provide aid and protection for the civilians caught in the conflict. The world cannot stand idly by while atrocities are committed against innocent people.
