Ukraine Launches Missile Attack on Occupied Crimean Peninsula
Ukraine Strikes Sevastopol in Crimea
During the early morning hours on Saturday, Ukraine carried out a missile attack on Sevastopol, a city located in the occupied Crimean Peninsula. This action was in response to the attack on Russia’s Black Sea Fleet headquarters, which occurred the previous day and resulted in a missing serviceman and significant damage to the main building.
As a result of the missile attack, Sevastopol was placed under an air raid alert for approximately an hour. Debris from intercepted missiles fell near a pier, leading to the suspension and later resumption of ferry traffic in the area.
Reports from a pro-Ukraine Telegram news channel indicated that loud blasts and rising smoke were observed in the vicinity of Vilne in northern Crimea. Since Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014, Ukrainian forces have frequently targeted this region in response to the full-scale invasion ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin in February 2022.
Casualties and Targets
According to Ukraine’s intelligence chief, Kyrylo Budanov, at least nine individuals were killed and 16 others were wounded in the attack on Russia’s Black Sea Fleet headquarters. Budanov also mentioned that Russian General Alexander Romanchuk, who commands forces along the southeastern front line, is in a critical condition following the assault.
While Budanov’s claims could not be independently verified, he did not provide information on whether Western-made missiles were utilized in Friday’s strike. Initially, the Russian Defense Ministry reported the death of one service member at the Black Sea Fleet headquarters, but later stated that the individual was missing.
Ukraine’s military provided additional details about the attack on Sevastopol, revealing that 12 strikes were conducted on the Black Sea Fleet headquarters. The strikes specifically targeted areas with personnel, military equipment, and weapons. Two anti-aircraft missile systems and four Russian artillery units were among the targets.
Strategic Significance and Ongoing Conflict
Crimea has played a vital role in supporting Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Sevastopol, as the main base of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet since the 19th century, holds particular importance for navy operations during the war.
Experts state that Ukraine’s recent focus on naval facilities in Crimea is crucial to degrade Russian morale and weaken its military. While Ukraine’s summer counteroffensive in the eastern and southern regions progresses slowly, maintaining attacks on targets in Crimea remains essential.
Russian Attacks and Ukrainian Casualties in Other Regions
Aside from the missile attack on Sevastopol, Russia launched 15 Iranian-made Shahed drones in the Zaporizhzhia region and Dnipropetrovsk province. Ukraine claimed to have destroyed 14 of these drones.
In the Zaporizhzhia region, Russia conducted 86 strikes on 27 settlements within close proximity to the conflict zone. Tragically, an 82-year-old civilian lost their life due to artillery fire. Furthermore, in the neighboring Kherson region, one person was killed and three others were wounded as a result of Russian shelling. The city of Kherson, located along the Dneiper River, which serves as the contact line between the warring sides, was targeted with 25 shells. Residential areas, medical and educational institutions, government-built stations, critical infrastructure, and a penitentiary were among the affected locations.
