UAW Files Unfair Labor Practice Charges Against General Motors and Stellantis
Introduction
The United Auto Workers (UAW) has taken legal action against automakers General Motors and Stellantis by filing unfair labor practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board. UAW President Shawn Fain made the announcement on Thursday night.
Failure to Bargain in Good Faith
Fain stated that the charges were brought against the companies due to their failure to negotiate with the union in good faith or within a reasonable timeframe. According to Fain, the companies did not respond promptly to the union’s demands.
No Complaint Against Ford Motor
Unlike General Motors and Stellantis, Ford Motor responded to the UAW’s demands with a counterproposal. As a result, the UAW did not file a complaint against Ford.
Criticism of Ford’s Proposal
However, Fain criticized Ford’s proposal, highlighting concerns over a 9% wage increase over four years, one-time lump-sum bonuses, and the use of lower-paid temporary workers without the same benefits. Fain also stated that Ford rejected the union’s job security and quality of life proposals.
No Immediate Comments
Representatives from the automakers, as well as the union and the NLRB, have not yet provided immediate comments or additional details regarding the filings.
