The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office requested security protection from the state after information that the mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu was assassinated by the opposition Republican People’s Party.
The move came after the investigation initiated by the Public Prosecutor’s Office regarding the report submitted by one of the convicts in the case of the murder of a member of the Council of State, regarding the information that he had attempted to assassinate İmamoğlu. He took office after a fierce competition with the candidate of the ruling Justice and Development Party.
The Turkish opposition newspaper “Zaman” added that the murder suspect Osman Yıldırım, who was imprisoned in the closed Edirne Prison, submitted a report to the Prisons Presidency at the end of last January stating that preparations were made for an assassination. Imamoglu, who was unsuccessfully attacked by a young man who raided his office in 2019, was holding a razor in his hand.
After the letter reached the municipality, when his son’s lawyer filed a criminal complaint with the prosecutor’s office, an investigation was immediately started regarding the incident and the Istanbul state was asked to take security measures for İmamoğlu’s safety.
