US officials are expressing growing concern that Beijing is using giant port cranes, made in its own territory, with sensitive sensors to gather intelligence.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday, pointing out that these Chinese cranes are of particular concern to US intelligence and military officials.
In this context, the Pentagon compared the ZPMC cranes installed in some US ports to a Trojan horse.
The newspaper pointed out that this technology is equipped with advanced sensors to track the origin and destination of cargo containers that will be transshipped.
She added: “Several cranes have been installed in ports used by the Pentagon. The army fears that Beijing will use cranes to track the movement of US military supplies.”
In addition, the paper shows that Chinese cranes have a remote access function that allows you to remotely influence their work.
“It’s the perfect combination of forensic work that can mask intelligence gathering,” said Bill Evanen, former director of the National Center for Counterintelligence and Security.
In addition, The Wall Street Journal pointed out that a spokesman for the Chinese embassy in Washington called the concerns “driven by paranoia” and an attempt to influence trade and economic cooperation.
Last Thursday, the US Department of Commerce decided to impose export restrictions on 37 organizations, including a Russian company, a Belarusian company and almost 30 Chinese organizations.
