On Thursday, the Iraqi Federal Integrity Commission announced three prison terms for a security officer after he was found guilty of embezzling more than 13 billion dinars (more than $9 million).
In a statement released by Alsumaria, the Investigation Division of the Integrity Commission stated that the Karhi Criminal Court delivered “three sentences in the presence of an officer with the rank of brigadier general of the Anti-Terrorism Service, each sentence serving five years and a month in prison in each case.”
The statement indicated that the officer had confiscated funds earmarked for expenses and not for risk to elements of the Counter Terrorism Service. The amounts for which the accused was convicted amounted to 3.9 billion dinars in 2015 and 5.8 billion dinars in 2016, while the appropriations for 2017 amounted to 3.6 billion dinars.
The statement warned that “the court after examining the evidence … and the evidence in the case” came to the conclusion that the defendant was responsible, “therefore, it decided to sentence him … to imprisonment for a period of five years and a month for each case, and apply penalties consecutively (respectively), for a total of 15 years and 3 months.”
