2023 Oscars Predictions: Best Original Screenplay
Weekly Commentary (Updated Sept. 28, 2023): 20th Century Studios has exclusively revealed to Haber Tusba that “The Bikeriders,” written and directed by Jeff Nichols, will be campaigned for Best Original Screenplay for the upcoming awards season. The film, inspired by the 1968 photo and interview book of the same name, tells a fictional story based on the Midwestern motorcycle club captured in the book’s photos. Despite most of Nichols’ previous films receiving critical acclaim, he has yet to be recognized. The studio is actively promoting the film, with a screening in Los Angeles where Nichols will be in attendance for a post-Q&A session.
The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has classified “The Bikeriders” as an original work rather than adapted. However, the official answer regarding its classification for the Academy Awards will be determined when ballots are open to members. It is important to note that an original work creates an entirely new narrative, while an adapted work transforms pre-existing material into a screenplay.
Another film, Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” co-written with Noah Baumbach, is also being campaigned for Best Original Screenplay, despite the official writing credit citing “based on ‘Barbie’ by Mattel” – a doll and toy company. The final nominations for the Oscars will be announced on Jan. 23, 2024, and the awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, March 10.
