Tap to Pay Now Available on iPhones in the United Kingdom
Tap to Pay is now available on iPhones in the United Kingdom, thanks to an announcement made by Apple. This makes it possible for large businesses, small merchants, and independent sellers to utilize iPhones as payment terminals.
The Feature that Transforms the Checkout Experience
This feature, released in February 2022, enables compatible iPhones to collect payments with Apple Pay, contactless credit and debit cards, and other digital wallets using only an iPhone; additional hardware or a credit card machine is not required.
How Tap to Pay Works on iPhone
Tap to Pay on the iPhone uses NFC technology, which securely ensures the authenticity of contactless payments. Additionally, the function offers PIN entry, which includes accessibility options.
Supporting Merchants Across the U.K.
According to Jennifer Bailey, vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet for Apple, “We’ve seen Tap to Pay on iPhone transform the checkout experience for so many different types of businesses, and we’re thrilled to now support merchants across the U.K. by offering an easy, secure, and private way to accept contactless payments using the power, security, and convenience of iPhone, with no additional hardware required.” “Small and medium-sized businesses have long played a vital role in the economy of the United Kingdom. Together with payment platforms, app developers, and payment networks, we are making it simpler than ever for businesses in the United Kingdom to accept contactless payments and continue to grow their operations in a seamless manner.”
Expanding Availability and Partnering with Payment Platforms
Tap to Pay on iPhone will soon be supported by other payment systems like Adyen, Dojo, myPOS, Stripe, SumUp, Viva Wallet, Worldline, and Zettle by PayPal. Revolut and Tyl by NatWest are the first payment platforms to offer this feature to their U.K. business customers. In the next weeks, the Tap to Pay feature on the iPhone will also become available in Apple Stores in the United Kingdom.
Requirements and Functionality for Tap to Pay on iPhone
Tap to Pay on iPhone requires users to have an iPhone XS or a newer model, and it functions for customers just like any other Apple Pay transaction would. The buyer can then use any suitable contactless payment option when the seller has opened the app, registered the sale, and presented their iPhone to them as part of the transaction.
Tap to Pay Now Available in the United Kingdom
Over 700,000 additional businesses across the United States can now accept payments using the Apple iPhone’s Tap to Pay feature. The capability has also been made available in Apple Stores located in the United States. Tap to Pay is now available in the United Kingdom, making it the fourth region to do so. Earlier this year, similar rollouts took place in Australia and Taiwan.
