Stitcher App and Web-Streaming Service to Shut Down in August 2023
Introduction
Stitcher, a popular podcast-listening app, will be shutting down its apps and web-streaming audio service on Aug. 29, 2023. This decision was made by SiriusXM, the owner of Stitcher, which plans to incorporate podcasts into its flagship SiriusXM subscription business.
What Happens to Stitcher?
Although the Stitcher apps and web-streaming service will be shut down, the company will continue to operate its Stitcher Studios and Earwolf networks that produce original podcast shows. SiriusXM has also stated that podcast fans will still be able to listen to ad-supported versions of shows that were on Stitcher on other platforms.
Stitcher Premium Service Discontinued
Stitcher’s Premium service, which provided thousands of podcasts without ads for $4.95/month (or $34.99/year), will be discontinued. Hosts and creators of podcasts exclusively on Stitcher Premium will determine the availability and accessibility of their shows. To stay updated on the availability of their content, followers are advised to follow the hosts/creators on social media or subscribe to their newsletters.
History of Stitcher
Stitcher first launched its podcast app in 2008 and has changed ownership several times since then. In 2020, SiriusXM acquired Stitcher in a deal worth up to $325 million from E.W. Scripps, who bought Stitcher for $4.5 million four years earlier through its Midroll Media unit.
Refunds for Stitcher Premium Subscribers
SiriusXM has turned off automatic renewals for all Stitcher Premium subscription plans and will issue refunds to applicable subscribers who purchased a plan directly from Stitcher or through the Apple or Google app stores. Refunds are expected to be processed starting on Aug. 29, and customers should allow up to 60 days to receive their refunds.
