Spotify Introduces Shared Volume Control for Group Session
Spotify has announced a new capability called shared volume control to enhance its shared-queue feature, Group Session. This feature allows listeners to adjust the volume of a song if they are sharing a compatible speaker with the host.
About Group Session
Group session is an exclusive feature available only to Spotify Premium users. Introduced in 2020, it enables multiple users to control real-time music playback and contribute songs to a collaborative playlist for the entire group to enjoy.
Volume Control Restrictions
If there are four or more users in one group session, volume control will be automatically disabled to maintain control with the host. However, hosts have the option to manually enable volume control by toggling on “Let guests change volume.”
Device Compatibility
The shared volume control feature is gradually rolling out globally for Android and iOS devices. It is compatible with Chromecast, Amazon Cast, and most Wi-Fi-enabled speakers including Sonos and Bose. Unfortunately, shared volume control is currently not supported on Apple AirPlay or Bluetooth devices.
In-Person Listening Only
This update can only be used for in-person listening sessions. Previously, users could use Group Session both remotely and in person.
