At least five civilians were killed and 30 others injured yesterday when an arms depot exploded in the town of Lavdar in Abyan, southern Yemen, according to security sources.
A security official told AFP that an “arms depot located under a residential building exploded under mysterious circumstances” in the town of Lavdar in the southern province of Abyan.
The explosion “destroyed the building and damaged nearby structures, killing at least five people and injuring more than 30,” the official said. Eyewitnesses report damage to nearby buildings.
Weapons are widely distributed in Yemen, and in the city of Lauder in the south of the country there is an arms market that sells various light and medium weapons.
