Sonic the Hedgehog: More Remakes and Reboots in the Works, Says SEGA President
SEGA is considering the development of additional remakes and reboots for the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, alongside new titles, according to Yukio Sugino, the company’s president and COO. In an interview with Famitsu, Sugino emphasized that not all of SEGA’s intellectual properties (IPs) are suitable for remakes and reboots, but the Sonic series could benefit from such endeavors.
“While we strive to explore new ideas, it’s important to note that not all IPs are equally suited for new releases and reboots. For each IP, we will carefully decide which approach is most fitting at the current time. Sonic, being SEGA’s flagship IP, is actively being considered for reboots and remakes alongside the development of new titles,” Sugino stated.
Last year, SEGA celebrated Sonic’s 30th anniversary by releasing Sonic Origins, a compilation of the classic 2D Sonic games. Additionally, Sonic Frontiers marked the first venture into an open-world direction for the franchise. While Sonic’s history with 3D games has had its ups and downs, the success of Frontiers suggests that the Blue Blur is headed in the right direction.
