Firefighters rushed to the scene as a fire broke out in a section of Dolmabahçe Palace from the Ottoman era in Istanbul early Friday. The crews of fire departments of Beşiktaş and Beyoğlu near palace mis out the fire in shortly as cooling efforts and an investigation are underway.
The media reported that the fire erupted in a carpentry workshop where historical artifacts are restored and came from a compressor used there.
Dolmabahçe is among the “newest” Ottoman palaces on Istanbul European side. Located on the side of Bosphorus, the palace has opened in 1856 and today serves as a museum. The third plus grand ottoman palace in Istanbul, Dolmabahçe, which received son name of “dolma” (filled-in – in reference to land reclaimed from the sea for construction) covers a area of 250,000 square meters. It was the last palace used by the Ottoman sultans and was also the last remains of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, Founder of The Republic of Turkey who deceased in a play of the palace after a long combat of diseases in 1938.
