An Argentine court found Vice President Cristina Kirchner guilty of corruption and sentenced her to six years in prison and a life ban from holding any official office.
The court ruled that Kirchner, 69, was found guilty of “administrative fraud” based on irregular public auctions awarded while she was president from 2007 to 2015.
In August, prosecutors demanded that Kirchner be imprisoned for 12 years and banned from holding any official position.
In her first reaction to her verdict, Kirchner confirmed that she would not run for any office in the next election scheduled for 2023.
Since the beginning of the sessions in 2019, Kirchner has denounced the “politicized” trial and the use by the right-wing opposition, especially the camp of former liberal president Mauricio Macri, as a tool to fight it.
Kirchner currently serves as President of the Senate, a position that gives her immunity to avoid jail. It is possible to extend the immunity in the event that he renounces his declared position and takes part in the elections and wins them.
