On Wednesday, a US Senate committee approved a bill that would significantly boost US military support for Taiwan, including billions of dollars in additional security assistance.
The US move comes amid growing pressure from China on the self-ruled island.
The draft “Taiwan Policy Law” still has several stages to go through before it becomes law.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s vote of 17 to 5 paves the way for a full vote in the House of Representatives.
It is not known when such a vote will take place.
