Sevilla have appointed Jorge Sampaoli as their coach to replace Julen Lopetegui, who was sacked on Wednesday after losing 4-1 to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.
A statement from the Andalusian club on Thursday said: “Sampaoli has signed a contract until 30 June 2024 and will have his first training session tonight (Thursday) at 18:30.”
Sampaoli returns to Sevilla after holding the position in the 2016-2017 season and then taking over as manager of the Argentina national team.
The 62-year-old has been free from any contractual obligations since leaving Marseille, France last July.
Some fans applauded Lopetegui at the Ramon Sanchez Pesjuan stadium, expressing anger at the club’s management after a heavy defeat to Dortmund.
Sevilla are 17th in the league after a series of poor results, while winning an orphan point from three matches in the Champions League group stage.
