On June 5, 2023, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that it had successfully thwarted an attempt by two groups of Ukrainian saboteurs to break into the Belgorod region. While Ukraine announced the success of yesterday’s attack on Belgorod and observers confirmed that the town of Bakhmut had come under heavy shelling from Ukrainian forces, the Russian Defense Ministry said yesterday that the Russian armed forces and the Federal Security Service had “thwarted the attempt.”
Details of the Attack
The Russian Defense Ministry reported that at 13:00 Moscow time, the militants tried to force the Seversky Donets River and land on the outskirts of Novaya Tavolganka. The attack was carried out under the cover of intense artillery fire, which was opened by the Armed Forces of Ukraine on civilian targets. The terrorist formations of the Kyiv regime were destroyed by air strikes and artillery fire from Russian units covering the state border of the Western Military District. The artillery managed to suppress five enemy mortar installations, disable the Grad missile system in the Volchansk region of the Kharkov province, and two Polish Crab self-propelled artillery installations that attacked Russian territory.
Background on the Belgorod Region
The Belgorod region has been regularly bombed by Ukraine since February 24, 2022, and since April 11, 2022, the entire region has been under a high level of danger in light of the ongoing repeated attacks by the Kiev regime, especially on the Shchepkinsky and Border areas of Grayvoron, while Russian forces are responding strikes that kill dozens of Ukrainian security forces and foreign mercenaries every day, confirming that the special operation will continue until all its goals are achieved.
Response to Ukrainian Counterattack
Earlier, Russia said it had repulsed a “large-scale attack” by Ukrainian troops on Moscow-annexed Donetsk in light of escalating fighting on the border between the two countries. The Russian Defense Ministry said that on Sunday in the south of Donetsk “the enemy launched a large-scale offensive in five sectors of the front.” Six mechanized battalions and two tank battalions of the enemy participated in the attack. Yesterday, the Russian Defense Ministry revealed the details of a failed Ukrainian attack in which the Kiev regime deployed 6 mechanized armored battalions, which were destroyed, and 300 Ukrainian soldiers with them were neutralized.
Ukrainian Defense Minister’s Remarks
In turn, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said that Kyiv would not be able to use F-16 fighters during the summer counterattack. Reznikov’s remarks were made during an exclusive interview with Japan’s NHK television, during which he said: “The F-16s won’t change much this summer and it will take time to prepare our pilots as our partners organize training courses for pilots, engineers, and technicians.” The Ukrainian Defense Ministry announced that Kyiv needed 48 American F-16 fighter jets to return to what it called “the 1991 borders.”
