Police said nine people, including at least one child, were gunned down in Newark, New Jersey on Thursday night.
Raul Malaf, a spokesman for the Newark government, said the wounded had been taken to two nearby hospitals, adding that they were all in stable condition and being treated for gunshot wounds.
The repeated mass shootings have sparked widespread outrage in the United States, where a majority of the population supports tougher gun laws, but opposition from many lawmakers and Republican voters has long been a stumbling block to major change.
A few hours earlier, local media reported, citing police officials, that a 20-year-old woman pushing her baby carriage down a New York street had been shot in the head.
The media reported that the victim was taken to the capital’s hospital center, where she died from her injuries, and the baby was not injured.
At a press conference near the scene in Manhattan, Eric Adams approached the mayor of New York to help catch the shooter.
“We will find the person accused of this terrible crime. We will find him and bring him to justice,” he said.
The NYPD tweeted that residents should avoid the area due to the investigation.
This incident led to a series of attacks, some seemingly random, on the streets and subways of New York City, which created a state of tension and unrest among residents.
