The organization representing Premier League referees has acknowledged that VAR’s decisions to disqualify West Ham and Newcastle’s goal this weekend were wrong and have vowed to “cooperate fully” with the Premier League to look into the two incidents.
The Professional Match Officials Committee (PGMOL) has taken the rare step of “recognizing” the controversial decisions.
Match VAR decisions are reviewed by a five-member independent panel made up of representatives from the Premier League, the PGMOL refereeing committee, as well as three former players. Their findings are sent to the respective clubs.
Controversy over West Ham’s denial of a late score at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea and another for Newcastle in a goalless draw against Crystal Palace prompted the Select Committee to agree to further investigation.
“PGMOL has acknowledged two cases of goal failures in Chelsea’s fixtures against West Ham and Newcastle’s fixtures against Crystal Palace,” the statement reads as part of our current assessment of weekly results and the development of match officials going forward.
