Opal Ticketing System in New South Wales Now Supports Express Mode for Apple Pay
The government of New South Wales in Australia made the announcement that the Opal ticketing system now supports Express Mode for Apple Pay payments. This enables the fare card to be attached to the Wallet app on a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch for tap-and-go payments across public transportation networks. The announcement was made by the government of New South Wales.
Express Mode for Easy and Convenient Payments
Through the usage of the Express Transit mode, customers are able to pay for journeys without having to wake up their iPhone or Apple Watch, unlock it, or launch the Opal app. Additionally, the mode eliminates the need to authenticate using Touch ID, Face ID, or a passcode on the device. Users are need to bring their iPhone or Apple Watch into close proximity to the contactless payment reader and keep it there until a checkmark displays on the display.
Phased Deployment of Express Mode
Transport for New South Wales carried out a phased deployment of Express Mode across the 25,000 card readers on the Opal network, first with ferries and light rail, then moving on to train stations, and finally finishing with the thousands of Opal readers on buses this week. The implementation began with ferries and light rail and began with train stations.
“Commuters in the Hunter, Illawarra, Blue Mountains, and everywhere in between will benefit from being the first public transport users in Australia to benefit from the mass rollout of this initiative,” stated Jo Haylen, the minister of transport for the state of New South Wales (NSW). “This initiative” “Life will be so much simpler for the nearly two million transport passengers in New South Wales who use contactless payments with a digital wallet,”
