In response to the Iranian regime’s continued crackdown on protests in the country, the European Union is preparing to announce a new package of sanctions against Tehran on Monday, an Al-Arabiya/Al-Hadas correspondent reports. A senior European diplomat said that European-American consultations on Iran’s nuclear weapons will be held in Munich, where the Munich Security Conference will begin on Friday, and EU foreign ministers will discuss the development of Iran’s nuclear program on Monday.
Since mid-September 2022, protests have reportedly erupted across large areas in Iran following the murder of a Kurdish girl, Mahsa Amini.
Her death in prison after being arrested by religious police sparked outrage in the country and provoked demonstrations in many cities, including Tehran, which included youth, schoolchildren and students who rejected the oppressive laws introduced decades ago.
While the security forces confronted the protesters with force and bullets, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of people, human rights organizations confirmed that thousands were arrested.
