Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Believes Trump Can’t Beat Biden in General Election, but Polls Show Otherwise
DeSantis Disagrees with Trump’s Electability
During a recent Fox News interview, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis expressed his skepticism about former President Donald Trump’s ability to defeat President Joe Biden in a general election. DeSantis pointed out that he had successfully beaten Biden in Georgia and Arizona, highlighting his own electability compared to Trump.
Polls Show Strong Support for Trump
However, despite DeSantis’ doubts, the latest national polls in the GOP primary race indicate a different perspective among Republican voters. According to a poll conducted by The New York Times and Siena College, Trump is leading the Republican field with 54% support, while DeSantis trails behind at 17%. Other GOP candidates scored below 3%. The survey, conducted from July 23 to July 27, has a margin of error of 3.96 percentage points.
Republican Voters Consider Trump More Electable
The same poll also revealed that likely Republican primary voters perceive Trump as more electable against Biden than DeSantis. When asked to choose between the two candidates based on their ability to defeat Biden, 58% of respondents selected Trump, while only 28% chose DeSantis.
DeSantis Defends His Position
Despite the poll results, DeSantis stands firm in his belief that he is the better candidate to take on the Democratic incumbent. In the Fox News interview, when asked if he thought Trump could win a general election against Biden, DeSantis responded negatively, stating that there are a significant number of voters who would not support Trump.
Concerns Surrounding Trump’s Leadership
In addition to his doubts about Trump’s electability, DeSantis argued that Trump would struggle to assemble a capable team to effectively govern. According to DeSantis, in order to dismantle the administrative state, a leader needs discipline and a supportive team. He expressed skepticism that Trump would be able to attract the necessary personnel to accomplish this goal.
DeSantis Campaign Faces Challenges
DeSantis’ recent remarks come in the midst of challenges for his own campaign. Reports suggest that his campaign has fired over 40% of its original staff within two months, raising concerns about fundraising and leading some top donors to explore alternative options in the primary.
