Dmitry Polyansky, Russia’s Deputy Representative to the United Nations, told US Assistant Secretary of State Wendy Sherman that Washington did not do the necessary effort in its negotiations with Moscow on security guarantees.
Sherman, who accused Russia of “aggression” against Ukraine at the Security Council meeting, said, “I was in direct contact with the Russian partners to find a peaceful solution, taking into account Russia’s concerns.”
He added that “he has made many proposals to dispel the concern”. We and NATO have submitted a document containing specific solutions that will allow us to solve security challenges.”
In response, Polyansky replied, “I won’t comment on the part about your participation in the negotiations, because you know their details better than I do or my colleagues. But if the negotiations were not successful, you probably did. Not putting enough effort in that direction.”
“Maybe we should have studied better and suggested more serious issues. We are where we are now,” he added.
It is noteworthy that last December, Russia asked the US and NATO to provide security guarantees that NATO would not expand eastward and that the alliance would not deploy its military infrastructure on the Russian border, but negotiations on these guarantees ended in January without any results.
