English Premier League champions Manchester City announced on Friday the signing of German goalkeeper Stefan Ortega on a free transfer.
The 29-year-old Ortega’s contract with Armenia Bielefeld expired at the end of last month and he will be the back-up defender for Brazilian Ederson.
“It’s a fantastic transfer for me,” Ortega said. “Manchester City are an amazing team, a team with a world-class squad in every position.”
“The opportunity to join this group of players and help continue the success of the club is my dream.”
Ortega is likely to replace American goalkeeper Zach Stephen, who is reportedly set to join Middlesbrough on loan to get more playing time ahead of the World Cup in Qatar.
“This is a very good deal for City. Stefan has excellent qualities and his professional career speaks for itself. We are signing a goalkeeper with a lot of experience and he will help us in our quest for new trophies,” said Cheke Begiristain, director of football at the club.
Ortega was City’s second signing in the summer transfer window, behind Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland.
The Premier League champions are close to signing England midfielder Calvin Phillips from Leeds United.
