The Australian Prime Minister said he will meet with top officials on Thursday to discuss the rising cost of lettuce following the decision by local KFC to replace greens with kale in its burgers.
Centre-left leader Anthony Albanese called the fast food chain’s decision “crazy”, joking that the situation had become a national “crisis”. Lettuce prices in Australian cities have risen by 300 percent due to recent floods and rising global fuel prices. The price of a head of iceberg lettuce has increased from $2 to about $8 in Sydney and Melbourne.

As a result, KFC has told Australian customers that it will be reducing the amount of lettuce in its products in favor of a blend that mixes evenly with kale and lettuce. “Cabbage is not the same as lettuce. This is the wrong decision,” Albanese told Kiss FM radio in Sydney. He added: “I will put the issue of the ‘cabbage scandal’ on the agenda of today’s cabinet meeting.”
