John Romero Supports a Remake of the Infamous Game “Daikatana”
The developer John Romero (known for Quake) recently expressed his support for a potential remake of the game “Daikatana”. Despite its high budget and grand aspirations, “Daikatana” is widely considered one of the worst first-person shooter games ever made. In the game, players take on the role of Hiro Miyamoto, the only person with the power to stop the antagonist, Kage Mishima. Mishima plans to manipulate space-time and establish himself as a dictator using the Daikatana, the world’s most powerful weapon.
However, due to multiple development delays, internal conflicts within the studio, and Romero’s own creative decisions, the game ultimately failed despite an estimated budget of $44 million. Nonetheless, Romero remains hopeful for its potential as a remake, stating, “I think Daikatana, if remade, could be an exciting game, more so than the original.” On social media, Romero mentions that he is already occupied with other projects.
John Romero’s Upcoming FPS Project
Despite the setback of “Daikatana,” John Romero has not stopped developing games. He revealed that he has been working on a first-person shooter (FPS) project for some time, although he cannot disclose any further details. A major publisher is involved in the development, suggesting a promising future for the game. It is likely that Romero Games, his own studio responsible for titles like Empire of Sin and SIGIL, will handle the development. There is speculation that the upcoming FPS may be a revival of Blackroom, an unreleased title originally slated for 2018.
In the proposed Blackroom game, players would have found themselves in a malfunctioning alternate world. Trapped in this deteriorating reality, the main character, Dr. Santiago Sonora, would have fought to distinguish between simulation and real life. In addition to his mysterious FPS project, Romero also confirmed on Reddit that Sigil 2, a sequel to his unofficial fifth installment of Doom, is scheduled for release on Sunday, December 10, 2023.
