Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida warned the United States this Saturday as he concluded his G7 tour that “East Asia could be the next Ukraine.”
The Prime Minister of Japan, which chairs the G7 this year, visited all G7 member states except Germany in one week due to scheduling problems, but he intends to travel to Berlin soon.
“The lesson to be learned from Ukraine is that the security of Europe and the Indo-Pacific are inseparable,” Fumio Kishida said at a press conference after meeting with US President Joe Biden.
“The situation around Japan is becoming increasingly dangerous, from attempts to forcefully change the status quo in the East and South China Seas to North Korea’s nuclear activities and missile launches,” he added.
This indicates China’s desire to increase its presence in the disputed maritime zone, which leads to friction with Japan, the Philippines and Vietnam.
There is also tension in the region over the island of Taiwan, which Beijing considers an integral part of its territory.
Because of this, Japan decided to double its defense spending over the next five years.
The leaders of the G7 meet next May at their annual summit in Hiroshima, where the United States dropped the atomic bomb on August 6, 1945, in the first nuclear attack in history, and is also the electoral stronghold of the Japanese prime minister. .
