The Operation
A soldier was killed and an officer wounded in an operation by Iraqi forces Sunday night against ISIS in northern Iraq, killing three of its members. A statement released by Security Media Cell said the operation was carried out by military forces in the Turklan district of Kirkuk province, north of Baghdad. The statement said the operation was carried out after “three gangs of ISIS terrorists were discovered.” Following this information, Iraqi army forces arrived on the scene and engaged them, succeeding in surrounding and destroying them and detonating the explosive belts they were wearing. The statement also said that a soldier was killed and an officer wounded in these clashes.
ISIS in Iraq and Syria
After successive attacks in 2014, the organization took control of large territories in Iraq and neighboring Syria and was defeated after a series of military operations against it in two countries with the support of international Washington-led coalition Iraq declared militant defeat in 2017. But according to the UN, extremist groups with militants camouflaged in remote locations could still attack on both sides of the border between Iraq and Syria. On June 11, three Iraqi soldiers were killed and four wounded in an attack west of Kirkuk attributed to the organization, and in late April the international coalition reported a decrease in ISIS attacks in Iraq and neighboring Syria.
Conclusion
The fight against ISIS in Iraq and Syria continues, with sporadic attacks still occurring. The bravery and sacrifice of the Iraqi soldiers and officers in this operation are commendable, but it is clear that more work needs to be done to completely eradicate this terrorist organization.
