More than 200 people have been killed in Iran after protests erupted across the country over the death of Mahsa Amini after they were stopped by the “vice police”, Iran’s National Security Council said.
Today, Saturday, the Islamic Republic News Agency quoted the Iranian National Security Council as saying that “more than 200 people” had died in the riots.
The council said in a statement that the dead included “enforcers” and “innocent people” who died as a result of “riots and terrorist attacks.”
This week, Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, commander of the Air Force of the Revolutionary Guards, announced for the first time that more than 300 people have been killed in Iran since protests over Amini’s death broke out.
Iran’s National Security Council has indicated that, in addition to the death toll, the damage caused by the violence is estimated to be in the millions of dollars.
According to the Oslo-based Iran Human Rights Organization, security forces have killed at least 448 protesters so far, most of them in Sistan-Baluchistan, located in southeastern Iran on the border with Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Last week, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said 14,000 people, including children, were arrested in the crackdown.
