The Iranian judiciary announced today that the death toll from the fire and riots at Tehran’s Evin prison has risen to eight prisoners.
And Reuters, citing Iranian sources, reported that 4 more prisoners died as a result of a fire that broke out a few days ago in the Evin prison.
And last Saturday, several deaths occurred after a fire broke out, amid riots and clashes, following four weeks of protests over the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini after her arrest for allegedly violating Iran’s strict dress code for women.
According to IRNA, shots and explosions were heard during the fire inside the prison, and the resulting fire generated thick smoke, as seen in videos posted on social media.
Relatives of the prisoners and human rights groups expressed serious concern about other prisoners and said authorities used tear gas to fight prisoners inside the prison.
And the official Iranian news agency reported that last night’s events in the Evin prison in Tehran resulted in 4 people being killed and 61 wounded.
The US State Department has previously warned that Iran is responsible for the safety of US citizens held in Evin prison following riots and fires that broke out inside the prison.
