Instagram Threads Gains 100 Million Users
The launch of Instagram Threads has been a huge success, attracting over 100 million users since its arrival. In fact, the app has already reached one-fifth of Twitter’s weekly active user base worldwide and is 86 times larger than Truth Social, its biggest rival in the US.
Initial Usage Data Shows Dip, but Momentum Continues
A recent analysis by app intelligence firm data.ai suggests that despite an initial decline in usage, momentum for Threads remains strong. According to Sensor Tower, another app intelligence firm, Threads experienced a 20% drop in daily active users on Tuesday and Wednesday, with time spent on the app decreasing by 50%. However, data.ai believes this dip is temporary.
Threads Sets Download Record
Threads has also seen impressive download numbers, surpassing 150 million downloads, according to current estimates from data.ai. This makes it 5.5 times faster in terms of downloads compared to Pokémon Go, which held the record for largest app launch title when it debuted in July 2016.
Demographic Insights and Regional Downloads
Data.ai reveals that during Threads’ first partial week of availability, it attracted approximately 93 million global active users before reaching the milestone of 100 million signups officially announced on July 10. Furthermore, India leads in terms of downloads with 33% of the global share, followed by Brazil (22%), the US (16%), and Mexico and Japan at 8% and 5%, respectively. It should be noted that Threads is currently not available in the EU due to regulatory hurdles and privacy concerns.
Ongoing Updates for Threads
A recent update for Threads introduced support for iOS 17, which is now available as a public beta. The app has more improvements planned, including a following feed, an edit button, multi-account support, and integration with ActivityPub, the protocol used by Mastodon, a popular decentralized alternative to Twitter.
