Police said on Tuesday that a 36-year-old fan was shot dead in Argentina during clashes between rival fans of the same club ahead of a second division football match.
Witnesses said: Clashes broke out between fans of Atlético de San Martin in San Miguel de Tucumán in the northwest of the country on Monday evening.
The official news agency Telam, citing police sources, said that fans were on their way to the stadium to attend the clash against Belgrano between first and second in the league.
San Martin President Ruben Moisillo said the victim was shot in the back of the head.
The police cordoned off the area after the incident, but the match took place and ended in a 1-0 victory for San Martin.
“The perpetrator has already been identified,” said Tucuman’s deputy police chief, Juan Ibáñez. Also on Monday night, about 15 people were arrested and three police officers were injured when fans of second tier club Nueva Chicago attempted to storm the dressing rooms after their team was defeated 2-3 by Almagro.
Violent clashes inside and outside stadiums have killed more than 300 people since Argentine football became professional in the 1930s, according to the NGO Salvimos al Futbol.
