The Electoral Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Friday ruled that Imran Khan is ineligible to stand in any upcoming elections or hold any public office due to his failure to disclose information about gifts he received from other countries.
Pakistan’s Electoral Commission on Friday condemned former Prime Minister Imran Khan for committing “acts of corruption”, a move condemned by his aide Fuad Chaudhry.
Chaudhry added: “We will appeal this decision of the Electoral Commission to the Supreme Court. We reject this decision of the Electoral Commission,” according to Reuters.
According to his lawyer, Gauhar Khan, the commission banned Khan from running for any political office for five years after the country’s electoral commission ruled that he misled officials about gifts he received while in office.
“The Electoral Commission of Pakistan announced that Imran Khan was involved in corrupt practices,” lawyer Gauhar Khan said.
He added, “We are currently appealing this to the Islamabad High Court.”
Pakistan’s former prime minister’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, has been accused of illegally receiving money from abroad.
A few days ago, former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party won a majority of seats in a by-election organized on Sunday, boosting the momentum of his campaign to demand an early general election from the government.
