The former Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, President Hussein al-Husseini, died yesterday at the American University Hospital at the age of over 85 after suffering from a severe case of Ermel’s flu and presided over the House of Representatives from 1984 to 1992. Husseini received a degree in business administration from Cairo University in 1963, worked as a director of an electricity generation and distribution company in Baalbek, was the head of the Shmastar municipality, and participated in the founding of the Amal Movement in 1973. He took office as president between 1978 and 1980.
He also helped set up the National Commission for the Preservation of the South in 1977 and was elected to the finance and work committees.
