The Italian league has appointed Maria Sol Ferreri Capote to officiate the 2022-2023 season, becoming the first woman to do so in the competition’s history.
Ferreri Capote, 31, became the first woman to referee a Serie A match last year when Cagliari faced Ciutadella in the Coppa Italia.
“It’s a great, great moment, and yet a sad moment when some people are surprised to have a woman on the refereeing list, of course Maria Sol’s choice to be the first woman to referee a top division match will make headlines. it’s a historic moment, but it’s a promotion,” said Alfredo Trentalang, head of the Italian judging committee. “It’s a merit, not just a grant.”
But she will now officiate in the top division for the first time next season after joining the league’s official roster on Friday.
Ferreri Capote joined the Referees Association in 2007 and worked in the regional leagues before starting fourth tier matches in 2015.
Her next step was in 2019 when she refereeed two matches in the European Women’s Championship qualifier, and the following year she began working in the third division, also refereeing a second division match between Citadella and Spal before meeting with Cagliari in the Coppa Italia. .
