The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has agreed to provide $130 million to Jordan to set up a High Food Security Council to manage food supply crises.
According to the Kingdom Channel website, the European Bank said: The loan will be provided to the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply, which is responsible for international and national procurement, storage, sale and distribution of wheat and barley in Jordan. , as the loan will fund grain purchase needs and support the expansion of strategic grain storage facilities throughout the country.
The Bank indicated that the project aims to support the Jordanian government by providing a loan to ensure the availability of liquidity for the purchase of grain and the expansion of strategic grain storage capacity, as well as to contribute to the country’s food security in response to the consequences of the Ukrainian crisis and the resulting disruption of grain supplies. and record prices. Jordan is heavily dependent on food imports, buying over 95% of its grain.
