The United Nations Secretary-General warned that the world is heading towards a “climate disaster” and that despite the worsening situation, economies continue to increase emissions of climate-warming greenhouse gases.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres added today at a conference on sustainable development held by “The Economist” in London on Monday that the goal is to limit the temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial times. The most ambitious target of the Paris Agreement in a critical situation”.
According to the United Nations, it will be necessary to reduce emissions by 45 percent by 2030 to limit temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius. But emissions are still rising, and the planet has averaged 1.1 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial times, which has doubled in heatwaves, droughts, storms and devastating floods.
“The problem is getting worse,” Guterres said in a pre-recorded video, noting that in 2020 climate disasters caused “30 million people to leave their homes, tripling the number of people displaced by conflict.”
Guterres described the continued dependence on fossil fuels as “insanity” and said that “dependence on fossil fuels is leading us to mass destruction.”
“The good news is that all G-20 governments, including China, Japan and Korea, have agreed to stop funding coal-fired projects abroad.”
“Now he should do the same at home,” he added.
