Image Comics Announces New Series “Grommets” with Rick Remender as Head Writer
Image Comics revealed their latest series, Grommets, during New York Comic Con. The highly anticipated comic will be led by award-winning writer Rick Remender.
A Tale Of Two Grommets
Grommets takes place in the ’80s skateboard culture outside of Sacramento, California. The story follows two best friends as they enter the punk rock world of skateboarding. The comic aims to provide an “authentic” portrayal of the culture before it gained worldwide fame, while also telling a captivating coming-of-age narrative from the perspective of the protagonists. The title of the book, “Grommets,” refers to new skateboarders.
In a press release, Rick Remender shared his personal experience, saying, “I spent the first 11 years of my life being humiliated in competition team sports… but that all ended the day I rode a skateboard. I spent the summer of 1984 skating from morning to night. Soon all my friends were there with me. Life became more fun than it had ever been before. The fun wasn’t based on winning; the competition was healthy, you were always backed up by a pal giving you support, telling you to keep at it until you nailed the trick. My skateboard was everything: it was how I got around, it was how I identified myself, it was how I spent all my free time before and after school, on every weekend, and most importantly… it was ours. The kids owned this sport.”
Comedian Brian Posehn will be joining Remender as a co-writer on Grommets. The creative team also includes Brett Parson and colorist Moreno Dinisio. Additionally, the series will feature several variant covers by renowned artists such as David Lapham, Andrew Robinson, Alex Riegel, Chuck BB, and Jon Wayshak. Grommets will be part of Rick Remender’s “Giant Generator” line, an imprint of Image Comics.
Grommets #1 is scheduled for release in April 2024.
