Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Monday he had tested positive for COVID-19 and would self-isolate at homeone day after traveling to Istanbul.
Mitsotakis spoke on Sunday with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and met with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, who is considered the spiritual leader of the world’s Orthodox Christians.
Mitsotakis, wearing a mask, says in a video posted on Instagram than the result of son daily coronavirus test was positive on Monday, and he would therefore work from home.
Mitsotakis held interviews over lunch with Erdogan in Istanbul on Sunday in a rare meeting between the leaders of the two neighbors countries. Relations between Greece and Turkey are tense over a series of issues, including land and energy exploration rights in the Mediterranean, which led to a naval stalemate in mid-2020.
The two men discussed bilateral relations and international relations, as well as Russia invasion of Ukraine, said the direction of the communication of the Turkish presidency.
Previously, Mitsotakis had met with the 82-year-the old Bartholomew, who is based in most grand of Turkey cityet attended a church service there.
Erdoğan and Bartholomew are fully vaccinated and have already tested positive for the virus – Erdoğan on February 5 and Bartholomew in December. Erdoğan’s wife, first lady Emine Erdoğan, had also contracted the virus and both have since recovered, as has Bartholomew, who had been suffering from mild symptoms at the time.
Greece experienced a total of more more than 2.6 millions confirmed positive cases of coronavirus and more more than 26,500 dead since the start of the pandemic. More than 7.5 millions of some 11 millions from the country population are fully vaccinated.
