A Surprising Connection Between “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer”
Did you know that the iconic Barbie doll has a hidden link to the extraordinary story of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer? The recent releases of Warner Bros.’ “Barbie” and Universal’s “Oppenheimer” have sparked much discussion due to their contrasting themes.
Despite their differences, it’s fascinating to discover that the creator of Barbie, Jack Ryan, actually had a background in weapons engineering.
Prior to designing the world’s most famous doll, Ryan worked for aerospace giant Raytheon and played a crucial role in developing the weapons that formed the backbone of America’s missile defense.
As a Yale-educated engineer, Ryan contributed to the creation of the Sparrow and Hawk missiles, which laid the foundation for the advanced Patriot missile system.
After his work in the defense industry, Ryan joined Mattel and eventually became the vice president of research and design for the toy manufacturer.
In 1959, Ryan filed a patent for his concept of a doll, which later became the globally recognized Barbie. He also played a role in creating other beloved toys like Chatty Cathy and the Hot Wheels collection.
Before his passing in 1991, Ryan amassed over 1,000 patents for his innovative designs.
Meanwhile, both “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” have been garnering strong ticket sales, prompting theaters to add extra showings to meet the growing demand.
“Barbie” has already earned an impressive $22.3 million at the domestic box office from Thursday night previews alone, with projections of reaching at least $140 million for the entire weekend. Similarly, “Oppenheimer” has achieved $10.5 million on Thursday and is expected to reach $60 million for the weekend.
Together, these two films are projected to generate over $200 million in the coming days, potentially making this weekend the highest-grossing of the year so far. Analysts even suggest that sales from other movies like “Mission Impossible,” “Sound of Freedom,” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” could push the weekend’s total box office earnings beyond $300 million.
