The attackers opened fire on Saturday night at a group of people in a suburb of the capital Johannesburg, killing four of them, police said Sunday.
The attack comes a week after two bar patrons were shot dead indiscriminately in two separate incidents in South Africa, killing 20 people, including 16 in Soweto, near Johannesburg. In Lynasia, a suburb south of the country’s economic capital, attackers opened fire on men gathered on a street corner on Saturday evening. Police spokesman Masundo Mavilla confirmed to AFP that they had killed four of them and wounded two more. “They were sitting, they were attacked for no apparent reason,” regional police chief Elias Moyla said at the scene of the attack, referring to “another terrible crime.” An investigation was opened. Shooting is common in South Africa, one of the most violent countries in the world.
