The first death from monkeypox is recorded in two new countries, indicating the spread of the disease both on the continents of Europe and in South America.
On Friday, Spain announced the death of a person from monkeypox, which the Spanish media described as the first death of its kind in the European Union.
The Spanish Ministry of Health said 120 people have been hospitalized with monkeypox so far, and one person has died. It was the first death from monkeypox in the country, the Spanish News Agency and other media reported.
The ministry did not provide further details, but only said that 4298 cases were detected in Spain, including 3500 cases in men who had sex with other men, and only 64 women among the total number of infected.
And before Spain reported the first death, it was preceded by a few hours by Brazil, the largest country in South America.
On Friday, Brazil reported its first death from monkeypox in a 41-year-old man.
Spain and Brazil have become the first two countries to announce a death from the disease outside of Africa, according to Reuters.
Experts believe the monkeypox outbreak in Europe and the Americas began with two parties held in Belgium and Spain.
The current outbreak is the largest outbreak of the virus and is classified by the World Health Organization as a global health emergency.
