Farmers in Greece says it is determined to shut down the main roads of the country in expression of soaring energy costs.
At a rally in the south of the city of Larisa in Central Greece, they decided on Sunday to demand a meeting with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
Like everything of Eastern Europe facing rising energy costs, Greek farmers are calling for subsidies to reduce their fuel costs and the end of electricity price adjustment costwhich reflects changes in the price of oil and natural gas imports.
Greece is one of the highest taxes on fuel in the European Union at 27, accounting for about two thirds of the price.
“Diesel costs around 1.60 euros (per litre), while in other european countries it’s 70 cents”, Asterios Tsikritsis, President of farmers’ union in the city of Tirnavos, north of Larissa, told The Associated Press (AP).
Greek farmers have already blocked a main road linking Larissa to the city of Kozani to the northwest for about 10 days. On Sunday they spilled milk on the road in the frame of their protest.
“At present, on can wonder if us and our herds will survive,” said Argiris Bairachtaris, President of the breeders of Tirnavos union.
