The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations called on FAO to continue to provide humanitarian support and food assistance to save lives in Afghanistan, stressing that the level of assistance to Afghanistan in recent months has averted a humanitarian catastrophe.
FAO Representative in Afghanistan Richard Trenchard stressed that the crisis is still ongoing due to severe food insecurity across the country, which has been caused by several factors such as the ongoing drought, the economic crisis and the growing debt that deprives 20 million Afghans of food. pointing to an urgent need for urgent support, high food prices and agricultural sector inputs have negatively impacted Afghans’ purchasing power for food.
FAO stressed the need to scale up critical food aid in Afghanistan and quickly reach those suffering from levels four and five of acute food insecurity before sliding into disaster.
In addition, dozens of women demonstrated in the capital, Kabul, to protest the Taliban leadership’s decision to require women to wear the veil (niqab) when they go outside, preferring to ban them from going outside except for work.
