Expats: Nicole Kidman’s Highly Anticipated Limited Series Gets Release Date
Prime Video’s highly anticipated limited series, Expats, starring Hollywood sensation Nicole Kidman, has finally set its release date. The Hong Kong-set project will hit the streaming service on January 26, 2024. Accompanying the announcement is a striking new poster that has piqued fans’ curiosity.
The Plot
The storyline of this upcoming miniseries is set in 2014 Hong Kong, where Kidman’s character, Margaret, is just one of the captivating leads. Joining her are Sarayu Blue and Ji-young Yoo, who portray two other women living in Hong Kong. In this interconnected tale, these three women’s lives take an unexpected twist due to a shared tragedy. With little information about the plot, viewers can only speculate on the emotional rollercoaster that awaits them. However, previous teaser images hint at a contemplative and romantic theme throughout the series.
An Impressive Cast
Expats boasts an impressive cast, with Brian Tee and Jack Huston also appearing alongside Kidman. Tee’s character, Clarke, is married to Kidman’s Margaret, adding another layer of complexity to the story. The miniseries also features talented young actors Tiana Gowen, Bodhi del Rosario, and Connor James Gillman, who play Margaret and Clarke’s children.
Based on a Best-Selling Novel
This six-episode miniseries is based on the best-selling novel The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee. After being greenlit by Amazon Studios in 2018, the adaptation has been in development, with celebrated filmmaker Lulu Wang attached as the director. Wang, known for her critically acclaimed movie The Farewell, joined the project in late 2019. On working with Kidman and the rest of the team, Wang expressed her gratitude for their support, saying, “It was a great learning experience for all of us.”
Filming Challenges and Kidman’s Involvement
Filming for Expats faced unprecedented challenges due to the impact of COVID-19 outbreaks and other obstacles, including concerns around Kidman’s involvement. However, Wang spoke highly of her working relationship with the talented actress. In an interview with Collider, Wang revealed, “I think that it wouldn’t have been made without her, and that is the fact. It was incredible that [Kidman] believed in my vision enough to help ensure I was supported.”
